Lead Carpenter Job Description

Reports to Production Manager
Pass the knowledge evaluation for advancement/placement to Lead Carpenter.
Have sign off on all skill tests in field by company certified trainer.

 

General Responsibilities

  • As an employee of this company you are expected to represent the professional image of this
    company by:
    • The standard workday is 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Be on time to work every day, calling before the start of the workday if illness or family emergency prevent your attendance that day. These are the two recognized reasons for missing work without prior notice.
    • You are expected to invest your own money in the purchase of tools that will be necessary for the job classification you are in within 6 months of obtaining that designation.
    • This job is a career choice. It is your responsibility to learn and demonstrate knowledge and ability to advance in position and pay scale.
  • Supervise all employees in activities on the job site.
  • It is every employee’s responsibility to be productive on the job site. If you have complete an assigned task, ask to be given another. If the Lead Carpenter is busy use the time well by cleaning up, stocking material, etc.
  • Safety is important on many fronts. You are responsible for your own safety and the safety of those working for you. You must learn the safety practices of this company and adhere to them.
  • Timecards are due on Monday by 7:00 AM. It is your responsibility to fill in your timecard every day and turn in to the office. Timecards that are not turned in on time or that are incomplete will not be paid until the next pay period.
  • In general, you will be asked to work independently. This will require attention to detail, quality, and ability to stay on task until finished.
  • If you must be absent due to illness or attending to other responsibilities, you are responsible to seeing that other employees remain on task and are productive. At times this will mean assigning new tasks in the flow of work.
  • With the assistance of Carpenter I and Carpenter II, track inventory of job site at the beginning, during, and at the end of the job. When items need to be restocked take action to be sure they are there when needed.

 

Customer Satisfaction

  • Communicate Daily with the client about schedule, cleanliness, changes, and other concerns,
  • Keep the job site clean
    • Broom clean on a daily basis
    • Vacuum clean at the end of each week
  • Get answer’s to client’s questions and concerns within 48 hours.
  • Write and present Change Orders within 48 hours.
  • Conduct a once a week site meeting with the Client, Production Manager, and Sales Person for review of job progress.

Jobsite Supervision

  • Complete a planning time designed for reviewing job documents and checklists.
  • Do an inspection of existing conditions to determine if there is damage not covered in the contract.
  • Create and maintain a project schedule designed to complete the job on budget and meet any commitments make during the sales process. If this cannot be done it is your responsibility to inform your Production Manager or Sales staff.
  • Participate in a Pre-Construction Conference before each job.
  • Arrive on the job by 7:00 AM to allow for setup and remain on the job until 3:30 PM.
  • Take (1) half hour lunch and breaks as needed to ensure a safe job site.
  • Create a working environment that brings the best out in other employees and that uses time as efficiently as possible.
  • Install all dust, safety and security protections before work is started on the project.
  • Enforce all company policies regarding safety, foul language, drugs, drinking and smoking. If someone continues to violate these policies it is your responsibility to report them to your supervisor.
  • Enforce all company safety policies and provide safe conditions for both workers and clients.
  • Do not perform any work not in the contract unless authorized by a signed Change Order.
  • Unlock job site at the beginning of each day and secure the property at the end of the day.
  • Be available during working hours to answer questions regarding the site from anyone on the site.
  • Protect the client’s property from theft, damage, or weather related loss.
  • Protect any items that will be reused or cannot be removed from the construction area, such as cabinets, bushes, or pool tables.
  •  Install and maintain a company job sign in front of the job.
  • Maintain a clean job site as seen from the street.
  • Remove large quantities of debris on a weekly basis or as needed.
  • Never use a client’s property or tools.
  • Follow through on the completion of a job, even after you have left it to start another.
  • Participate in the Final Completion Walk Through meeting and complete items on the list within 10 working days unless otherwise noted.

Carpentry Labor

  • Know and understand all plans and specifications.
  • Getting answers to questions when plans and specifications are unclear.
  • Completing all work related to carpentry and other work generally done by this company, such as:
    • Framing
    • Exterior trim
    • Install windows and doors
    • Install siding of all varieties
    • Install interior doors
    • Install interior trim of all varieties
    • Install cabinets
    • Install and hook up appliances
    • Install hardware floors
  • Have all the tools required for proper installation of the above-mentioned tasks.
  • Supervise all work done by other employees to ensure conformance with company standards and specifications.

Supervision and Scheduling of Subcontractors

  • Call subcontractors two weeks before they are needed on the site for pre-scheduling.
  • Call subcontractors one week before they are needed to confirm schedule and to discuss the work.
  • Call subcontractor 48 hours ahead of the time they are needed to confirm the schedule.
  • Call subcontractors 24 hours ahead to confirm schedule.
  • Be prepared for the subcontractor on the day they are scheduled. If not, you are responsible for giving them one week’s notice.
  • Provide each subcontractor with information concerning the job before they arrive to facilitate a smooth beginning once they arrive.
  • Provide the subcontractor with accurate paperwork such as revised plans and specifications.
  • Answer any questions the subcontractor has on the site concerning layout or specifications.
  • Check each subcontractor’s work when they are finished to ensure completeness and conformance with their contract.
  • Authorize payment of subcontractor by the office.
  • Either clean up or ensure that the subcontractors clean up.

Inspections

  • Know the process of getting an inspection in all jurisdiction in which we work
  • Schedule and monitor the inspection of all phases of work including the final.
  • Be on site when the inspector arrives, accompanying them in the inspector, and dealing with issues that arise.
  • Staying as current as possible on codes that effect your work.

Materials Management

  • Complete a material takeoff of all materials during the planning time for each job. This list will specify the material, the amount and the use.
  • Fax the material list to supplier(s) for quotes on prices.
  • Using the material list, order materials 48 hours in advance of need so that material is delivered to the site.
  • Order the proper amount of materials to ensure that trips to lumberyard during the working day are limited to one every two weeks.
  • Receive material deliveries, sign receipts, and check to ensure proper quantities and quality.
  • Return undamaged materials that cannot be used at the first available time.
  • Store materials in a way that reduces damage after they are delivered to the site.
  • Check the status of special orders at the beginning of each job. If they have not been ordered you are responsible for getting them ordered in enough time to ensure installation according to the schedule.

Maintenance of Job Paperwork

  • Maintenance of Job Paperwork
  • Complete daily job log at the end of each workday.
  • Complete your timecard at the end of each work day and submit it to the office by 7am on Monday.
  • Complete the daily schedule form at the end of each workday.
  • Submit all receipts of purchased or delivered items every Friday.
  • Complete the Charge Order Estimating form and Change Order form for all changes made to the
    contract. These must be turned in every Friday
